With only one year left on his current contract with the Bundesliga club, the young midfielder has been heavily linked with moves to other top European clubs this summer - with Real Madrid and Arsenal reported to be interested.
The former Schalke man was in negotiations over a new contract with the German club, but it appears that the talks have stalled - as general manager Klaus Allofs admitted that the two parties had been unable to find a solution.
Now The Sun reports that the Red Devils are keeping tabs on the talented midfielder, since manager Sir Alex Ferguson missed out on bringing him to Old Trafford as a teenager.
